ArchuMania 2010: A year in review (Part 2)

June 1st marked an important day on David’s career, he launched his 1st ever penned book entitled Chords of Strength, with the help of journalist/ethnomusicologist Monica Haim. Here’s a summary of the book.
Archuleta is not the fame-hungry, celebrity-obsessed Hollywood child star one might expect. He comes across as a sensitive, introspective and bright young man. His earliest childhood recollections are richly detailed with images of scurrying lizards, homemade flour tortillas and duck-egg hunts within a warm familial milieu. Indeed, Archuleta has done his genealogical research and offers an account of the musical and spiritual journey that led his family to Utah.
It was in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, where missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints converted his grandmother, aunts and mother Lupe to the LDS faith. Lupe was only 14 when the family immigrated to Florida, and Grandma soon put her to work singing and dancing at various Miami venues. David’s father, Jeff, was also no musical slouch, either, so when Jeff and Lupe married, they formed a very melodious family: Other consanguinities included a great-grandfather who was a big-band jazz pianist, a grandmother who sang in musical theater and a grandfather who was a member of a barbershop quartet. In fact, there must have been quite a panic on the Palm Beach music scene when Jeff accepted a (nonmusic-related) job in Utah.
The family was not wealthy, and had to sell most of its possessions at a garage sale to afford the trek. After arriving in the Beehive State, David’s family moved around a lot, bouncing from Murray to Centerville to Sandy while Jeff was employed in the computer-equipment biz. And, despite a rather rootless existence, this was when David began developing his musical abilities in earnest.
In fact, it seems father Jeff had the most profound influence on David’s career. It was he who introduced his son to a recording of Les Miserables—which inspired David to learn young Cosette’s “Castle on a Cloud”—as well as the wonders of Jennifer Holliday’s Tony Award-winning “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Dreamgirls. There were lots of songs like this, really, and even though the kid could belt out the high notes like anybody’s business, for some reason he never felt quite secure in his role as a young man who was into Broadway musicals.
Pre-performance panic attacks and a bout with vocal paralysis ensued— and it was only through faith, the support of his family and the power of prayer that David managed to go on. It really is an inspiring story. Of course, Archuleta is no Augusten Burroughs. At 19 years old, the vocalist’s budding emotional sensibilities are still too fragile and his childhood traumas too recent to allow for Burroughs’ brand of brutally genuine, warts-and-all candor. At many points throughout the book, Archie’s tone becomes a bit guarded, as that of a writer who is too aware of his readership and, perhaps, courts too much the approval of fans, parents and religious leaders. Well, setting aside fireworks and barbecues on this day, David Archuleta lightened up the holiday singing the star-spangled banner and the hit stand by me on July 4 in Washington D.C. at the Capital Fourth Show. Archuleta were joined by Gladys Knight, Reba McEntire, Darius Rucker, John Schneider, classical pianist Lang Lang and the National Symphony Orchestra at the U.S Capitol, Washington D.C.. Not only he did impressed a huge crowd, but also one of the back-up vocalists for the Capitol Fourth event, Vanessa Williams, blogged about her experiences so far in the said event, and wrote wonderfully about our David. Not only has she acknowledged David’s amazing chops, but equally important, David’s person and character.

For the 1st time in Manila, Something ‘Bout Love was played over the radio Magic 89.9 at around 5 pm , July 5. Fans reacted overly again and again, as they listened to the song being played on the radio. The song is very upbeat, catchy, and hopeful, very positive. A song, which displays his wide-vocal range. his voice is so low in parts and just soars in other parts. Love the melody and lyrics. Goosebumps were on Fans, and it was like the experience they had when they 1st heard the song ‘Crush’ 2 years back.

On Sunday, July 11, David, alongside with many others, have paid tribute to one of his musical influences/inspiration, in the name of Selena Qiuntanilla-Perez at the 30th annual Tejano Music Awards. He admitted that Selena’s ‘Como La flor was one of David’s 1st song that he ever learned. Here’s video of him singing the song. The Tejano music awards is part of the Tejano Music Weekened.

The Music video for David’s single SBL premiered in Vevo on August 5. The video features a sad-looking Archuleta and a cast of attractive young people. The clip finds the ‘Idol’ runner-up walking around a city before stumbling upon a gorgeously lit apartment party. The video is your average happy, feel good music video, featuring the teenagers doing a variety of good deeds for other people; under the influence of love…love of all kinds, even going beyond boy-girl relationships! “Hang on, hang in, for the ride of your life,” Archuleta croons with clenched fists. The slow-motion shots nicely capture the romantic vibe of the track, and Archuleta makes for a compelling pop presence. As he said, “[It's] about people who are feeling a little down and a little alone… and just feeling a little frustrated with love or their situation in life. Even though you might feel down with love, there’s something about it you shouldn’t give up on.

The 2010 Teen Choice Awards happened on August 8 at the Gibson Ampitheatre in Univeral City, California, but the winners have already been announced ahead of the event’s broadcast on Fox tonight. As expected, hurrah for all Archies, David bagged his sixth Teen Choice Award for Choice American Idol Alum beating Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and carrie Underwood.. Woohoo. Not only did he scooped the surf board, but he managed to walk down the red carpet prior to the event and presented an award alongside Cena, the wrestler, presenting the choice Hottie Award…an epic pairing! And, at the latter of the show, he went at the press con and shared his insights on Idol, TOSOD etc.
“I’m kind of a dork and I just wanted to show that … I’m not trying to be something cool and impressive…. When just be yourself, that’s what people connect to the most”, when asked about his 2nd pop album. He also gave his side about the hit series Glee, “We finally have someone to relate to, people who didn’t quite fit in but who love music. ‘Glee’ represents all of us geeks.”
And he also have something to say on the new judges of Idol judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler: “They are really interesting choices. They need to give ‘American Idol’ a new face. I feel like it’s time for ‘American Idol’ to have a complete facelift.” Lastly, he shared what his favourite books are ‘’To Kill a Mockingbird.’ Also the Dr. Seuss books ‘when I was little.’ …”My favorite book is ‘The Alchemist,’ about someone who is trying to follow their dreams and their heart but being unsure of what that is.”

Tennessee Performing Arts Center decked the halls on September 3 for Orla Fallon and her talented friends featuring David Archuleta, Méav and Mark Wills for the upcoming PBS Christmas Special “Orla Fallon’s Celtic Christmas.” Candles and a harp were set up for Fallon’s duet with David Archuleta on “Silent Night.” Archuleta performed two more carols for the event.

Hosted by Brian Williams, Diane Sawyer and Katie Couric, the SU2C broadcast is dedicated to the 12 million U.S. cancer survivors illustrating how groundbreaking research can change the tide in the fight against the disease. NBC has aired the telecast on Friday, September 10, 2010. not to mention, our very own David Archuleta was there to give his support to the said charity show. It was reported that he kept on answering phone calls until the end of the show. He was also featured hosting a bit, together with @pastelpastel and AI host Ryan Seacrest. Early that day prior to the event proper, he walked down the red carpet

His sophomore effort, “The Other Side of Down,” released on October 5 on Jive, Archuleta has turned into his goofy, young self on display, this time through lively, upbeat pop tunes.
“My goal with the album was to make it as ‘me’ as possible,” says Archuleta, “I wanted to introduce people to the kind of goofy, dorky, weird personality I have. The first album had a lot of great pop songs, but this album is so much more personal.”
For the release, Archuleta tapped “Crush” writers Emanuel Kiriakou and Dave Hodges, who contributed two songs, as well as co-writers Sam Hollander and Dave Katz, among others. Writing sessions took place in Nashville (“People asked if I was there making a country album,” he recalls), in between the release of Archuleta’s holiday album, “Christmas From the Heart” (which has sold 212,000, according to SoundScan) and work on his book, “Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song, and the Power of Perseverance,” published in June.
The album’s first single, “Something ‘Bout Love,” was released July 20 and has sold 45,000 downloads, according to SoundScan. Elsewhere, Archuleta delivers an uplifting, positive message on “Things Are Gonna Get Better,” and his boyish charm is on display on songs like “Elevator,” which Archuleta notes was inspired by a dream.
“It was a random dream I had about these different elevators and trying to figure out what floor to get off of,” he says. “It’s about how life is sometimes an endless ride. You may not be sure where you’re going.” In terms of music, vocals and lyrics, “Elevator” is subtle and strong. The song isn’t pushy, and allows the audience to go with the flow. “Elevator” is set to impact hot AC stations Oct. 4

The shift from run-of-the-mill balladry that first solidified Archuleta’s post-”Idol” fan base to a more current pop sound puts him in line with peers like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus, who currently saturate the teen and tween market.
The “Other Side of Down” campaign is heavily targeting that age group with a back-to-school campaign at 750 junior high and high schools across the nation. Jive Label Group director of marketing Nicole Bilzerian says the campaign, which kicked off Sept. 27, is servicing schools with promotional items like bookmarks and locker posters, as well as the “Something ‘Bout Love” single and video for school radio and TV station consideration. Individual school newspapers will also feature single and album reviews in the coming weeks.
Archuleta has been doing a radio tour that will carry through the release, where he’s been performing rather than just hitting the interview circuit. “We picked markets he could perform in, because that’s one of his best assets,” Bilzerian says. “He gets onstage and sings and gives everyone chills.”
American Idol alumnus David Archuleta is back in town on the historic day of November 17, the so-called DALIM 2!
The baby-faced crooner arrived in Manila Tuesday afternoon of the 16th to promote his sophomore album, “The Other Side of Down.”

Archuleta, runner-up in the seventh season of the popular star search in the US, deplaned at 3 p.m. at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2. He flew aboard Philippine Airlines flight 502 from Singapore, which was delayed by almost an hour.

Smiling, he waved to a group of about 30 fans, clad in jeans and a white shirt with a smiley design. He answered questions from a group of reporters, TV news crews and photographers, who were waiting for his arrival. “For me, it’s about moving forward and making progress,” David explains. “I’m heading towards ‘the other side of down,’ which is ‘up.’”

American pop singer David Archuleta waves during the launching of his new album ‘The Other Side of Down’ at a shopping mall Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010 in suburban Quezon City, north of Manila, Philippines. The show started at past 6 pm, as avid fans flocked the dome, shouting at the top of their voices, screaming as he came into the stage for the one-night event. He rendered 3 songs to his fans namely Elevator, Crush and his latest hit single Something ‘Bout Love.

ArchuMania 2010: A year in review (Part 1)
We have come again to the very end of a cycle in a man’s journey. Well, whether or not we like it, the year 2010 will bid its farewell a few moments now, and the new year will start to come in our lives. Yes! It was such an endearing year for us all, as an Archunation! But before we let go of this year, we take a look/glimpse of the important news, activities or events, which stood out in the career of our Idol David Archuleta for the year 2010.

Jan. 22, 2010. After the onslaught of the Jan. 12 Haiti earthquake, the A-list celebrities of Hollywood gathered for a Telethon on Jan. 22 to raise money for the ruined. No exception on the all-star cast was David Archuleta, who kept answering phone calls one by one for the extraordinary money raising event. He even said on Twitter: What an awesome experience. Thanks everyone who donated. So cool seeing so many people there helping!

David Archuleta gives pal Jordin Sparks a blue thumbs up as they attend the 2010 Jordin Sparks Experience held at Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach on Wednesday evening (February 3) in Miami. The Starkey Hearing Foundation teamed up with American Idol and national recording artists, Jordin Sparks and David Archuleta, to deliver the gift of hearing to 100 children throughout the Miami area.

At the evening, David and Jordin put their voices together and sang “No air” at the so-called Sparkston Teddy Bear Picnic where in the following day, David and Jordin delivered the signed Teddy bear stuffed toys and gave them to the kids, plus hanging out with them was inevitable.

David also participated in the recording of the Spanish language version of the song “WE are the World”, entitled “Somos El Mundo”, and all proceeds have gone to the rebuilding of Haiti through the We Are the World Foundation., to benefit the Haitian earthquake victims. David was joined by a horde of the best Latin singers helmed by Gloria Estefan. The recording took place on February 19 taking advantage of the presence of many artists in town for Univision?s Premios Lo Nuestro. A music video and making-off special was aired on the Univision network on March 1.

Old out, New one In! On March 5, the new DavidArchuleta.com site was reloaded to a new format. David was really excited for this new site because it is the official spot for all things David including exclusive news, music, videos, tour information and more! I haven’t said much ado on this new form, what about you, were you thrilled this year to the new face of the site?

David Archuleta rocked the “American Idol” stage a couple of years back with a stunning version of “Imagine,” so he was back again on April 7 on the results night to perform the tune — after the Top 9 Idol hopefuls sang the John Lennon-Paul McCartney songbook. The Season Seven runner-upbroke out his version of “Imagine” while sporting a Fab Four bowl cut. Two years have given his take on the song a fair amount of gravitas, and, well, the fact that he could actually carry the tune the whole way through not only made him the true winner of the night, it outclassed a good two-thirds of the performances from Tuesday’s episode. The song, in fact, became a calling card of sorts for the then-17-year-old crooner, who first performed it in only his second week on the show. At the time, his rendition of the tune catapulted him to front-runner status, leaving then-judge Paula Abdul teary-eyed and igniting a wellspring of support. Archuleta made it all the way to the final show, failing only to beat rival David Cook.

On May 22, David invades Manila, not with his music, but this time a freshly-penned book entitled Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song, and the Power of Perseverance. At 10 am, at NBS glorietta 5, fans lined up to buy the much anticipated book. A fan even said that the book was not yet on the shelves , and they have to open the box to have the book displayed. Intimate and uplifting, Chords of Strength allows a unique glimpse of the man behind the music and offers hope to anyone with a passion and a dream. In Chords of Strength, David shares his unexpected and inspiring journey, including how he overcame vocal cord paralysis to achieve his dream of being a singer. He reveals insecurities he felt about his voice-before he realized that he loved the way singing made him feel more than he disliked the way he sounded. In this personal memoir, David opens up about the strength he draws from his unshakable faith and unyielding family. He pays tribute to those who continue to inspire him and through their example help him believe in himself, his talent, and his abilities.

David showed up on the red carpet among many others who were anticipating the May 26th night’s finale — not only for the contestants, but a finale night for the one everyone loves to hate, Simon Cowell. “I’ll be watching tonight, just having a good time, it’s like a family reunion here,” says former American Idol finalist, David Archuleta . Archuleta says that Simon “made the show what it is today.” Before the finale event, he walked through the red carpet with other A.I. alumni, adored and cheered by many fans and talked in an interview! During the tribute to Simon, David walked through the stage together with most of A.I. alumni singing a farewell song to Simon.
