Jamie Lawson’s Interview With David Archuleta
{LDSL Blog} My Interview with David Archuleta
Jamie Lawson
Talented. Adorable. Sweet. These are just a few words often used to describe singing sensation David Archuleta. Before I met him, I couldn’t help but wonder how much of his image reflected who he really was. Here’s the story, folks: he’s the real deal. In fact, there’s a lot more to David than meets the eye.
I recently interviewed David Archuleta for a story inLDS Living’s November/December issue (click here to read an excerpt). Just as I expected, he was gracious, humble, and delightful to talk to. But beyond his angelic and unassuming nature, David possesses a deep passion for music and a strong conviction to stay true to himself. I have to admit it—this is something I didn’t anticipate.
I knew David is very good at what he does (I was already a fan), but I admire him so much more now that I know he truly sees his talent as a gift from God and takes very seriously his responsibility to use it to uplift and inspire others. I saw nothing but sincerity in his eyes when he told me, “I want to sing about something that has a real message. That’s where my heart is. That’s what I love. I feel like that’s what I need to do.”
It was fascinating to listen to him talk about the pressures he has faced in the spotlight, particularly the pressure placed upon him by people in the music industry to portray a certain image or sing songs that he wasn’t comfortable with. In fact, my favorite moment with David was when he said, “No one can tell me who I am and am not. I’m just going to be true to myself.”
I have no doubt we will see great things from David in the future. One of the projects he hopes to complete soon, although there are no solid plans yet, is a Latin album in honor of his Hispanic roots (his mother, Lupe, is from Honduras). He also has a few surprises in store—whether in his personal life or professional life, he wouldn’t say, but it’s clear to me that David knows his own path, regardless of what anyone else has to say about it.

Exclusive DA Interview From AP’s Own @Nareejo
The Interview That Never Was
AP’s own Naree writes about her unbelievable fairytale of a conversation (yes, it was more like one!) with the one and only Mr. Archuleta (and its such a wonderful read!).
Here’s an excerpt:
As we start the interview, I try to redeem myself and explain why I have all the stuff I have. But I make a booboo with my first words. I say I am his “greatest” fan, when I meant to say I am his “biggest” and that HE is the Greatest singer evah! I try to cover up by sucking up big time! ( I can’t watch the beginning of the video without cringing! But as I commend Jeff (and Lupe) for doing a good job in raising him, on the side I see Jeff with a big smile on his face as he looks on…
As David answers my first question, I stare and watch him …and I am mesmerized by the beauty of his face. I see a sparkle in his eyes as he talks about the music he wants to create. I see his enthusiasm, his determination, his joy, his love for music… and then I loose track of what he is saying!
It has been told over and over by fans all over the world how they get tongue tied, when they see David and that is with just a few seconds at a M&G when he just smiles or says hello. This feeling is magnified a million times when you are hit by the onslaught of his rambling to you for several minutes! I totally lost it! I felt like I was in a vortex, an out of body experience. I was there …but, I wasn’t there! I knew I had to ask him another question or at least react to what he was saying…but what was he saying???
I tried to remember the next question on the list and just blurted it out, cutting David off (sorry David). To myself, I prayed the question made sense. Looking back at the video now, I’m glad it wasnt too far off from what he said.

Meanwhile, get your face muscles ready cause you’re gonna smile non-stop with this!

American Idol’s Archuleta brings pleasant surprise at Korean hunt for pop stars in HK
It takes the promise of South Korean stardom to bring all the would-be teen idols out of the woodwork in Hong Kong, it would seem. Joining forces with a production team from the country, tvN held auditions for the next K-Pop Star Hunt at the Star TV studios at the weekend, and the response was overwhelming.
More than 1,000 applications flooded in, and over the two-day audition process, 100 semi-finalists were whittled down to 10 finalists and then two lucky winners – 16-year-old Yeung Tung and 17-year-old Andy Lui – who will be sent to Seoul to train with the best idol-makers Korea has to offer.
Guest judges Chet Lam Yat-fung and Louie Castro spent two afternoons vetting contestants, at times giving a little tough love to those reluctant to come out of their shell.
“I see such a difference in this new generation of would-be performers,” Lam said. “Back in the day, maybe because we didn’t have so much entertainment readily available, we had to be more creative to keep things interesting for ourselves. At these auditions, I’ve had to look hard to find the kind of stage presence and self-expression that is so important for a performer. Confidence that shines through is so important.”
With tensions high and the hours long, a surprise visit from American Idol runner-up David Archuleta gave a welcome reprieve for contestants and judges alike. The 20-year-old was in town for a media week performance, and he popped in to give a bit of encouragement.
“I think it’s great that the girls and guys here – and they look so young – are pursuing their dreams through this project. It takes courage. That deserves respect.” Right back at you, kid!

Hong Kong beat love song MV David Archuleta mountain loneliness
David does not exclude the future, more filming, but the premise is to enhance the acting.
“American Idol” (American Idol) 7 Series runner-up David Archuleta Channel V last week to Hong Kong to attend the activities, and take new song “Wait” of the MV, because of the song included in the special edition album in Asia, the most appropriate shooting in Hong Kong . The song say people can not distinguish dream and reality, even people living in many places still feel lonely, when he revealed that lonely mountain, to escape the hustle and bustle outside the earth, and sometimes get inspiration.
David’s first visit, described Hong Kong’s sky is blue, very clean, the glass floor in the middle of the room looking out to see the sea with distant mountains, it is refreshing, “and I like mountains, I feel particularly comfortable.” He tasted the Beijing duck, dumplings and other local delicacies, but also cooperation with Hong Kong director Zhuang Shaorong, film songs in the Central MV, looking busy day in the ring compared with the quiet night, it seems like the middle of a dream-like. Slightly curved in the sense of loneliness mentioned, he refers to everyone lonely, do not be overly pessimistic case of lonely door, should be the face of it, because some things can be found only when alone. In the U.S. he often went hiking a person, by nature, landscape, so that the mind has been precipitated. He admits: “is not just lonely, as long as there is a strong feeling, will write down, in order to create.” He smiled and returned to see his things down, sometimes not guess what was in want.
Thanks to a unique voice, vocal cord paralysis
“American Idol” broadcast the first series, David learned a lot of singing techniques, but participants were attracted to the scene of heart sing, so he decided to follow them. However, he was vocal cord paralysis, time to treatment for several years, suspended to sing, he had lost, discouraged too, but he really loves to sing, to be vocal rehabilitation after they entered the competition. The doctor that his vocal cords and the others do not, it is amazing, he then said with a smile than the common people become sexy voice, full of magnetism, be blessed because of illness. During the competition, it was rumored that he has a dispute with his father, David recalled father-son relationship was strained Zengyin rumors, but fortunately there is no problem now, feeling far better than the old. Although he refers to his father is a small trumpet, they did not know his trumpet playing. Asked whether to invite the parents along with performances, he said Cuban dance and sing with her mother had performed several times, the father is not, in the future or will make a special creation of music that contains a small speaker in order to perform the same stage with his father.

NEW STRAIT TIMES – Showbiz: Touched By Archie
American Idol Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta came, sang and conquered the hearts of his fans with ease, writes SUBHADRA DEVAN
DAVID Archuleta, at a mere 173cm (the same height as kungfu exponent Donnie Yen), is a powerhouse when it comes to music.
At his first full concert here last Tuesday, the American Idol Season 7 runner-up delivered song after song, to the screams of girls.
The venue, Stadium Negara, was three-quarters filled and it was obvious that the tweens, teens and everyone else seemed happy just to hear Archuleta sing “live”.
Despite the deafening screams and a sound system that left a boom in my ears, there was a convivial family-like atmosphere at the stadium.
In slacks and wearing a shirt over a T-shirt, the 20-year-old from Utah bounced around the stage without the need of a backup dance group, singing his heart out for his fans.
He sat down at the keyboard a few times, including for the ballad, A Thousand Miles, giving the Vanessa Carlton hit an R&B twist.
He also performed another keyboard solo, this time for Crazy (a hit for hip-hop artiste Gnarls Barkley), turning it into a ballad.
He told the crowd that he did Crazy for Idol 7’s Hollywood Week. I remember he was 16 then, but four years later, his performance “live” is even more moving.
Archuleta also gave a rendition of a few new songs found on the repackaged 2011 The Other Side Of Down: Asia Tour Edition. This tour is in part to promote the album and, of course, a response to his fans who called for a concert on Facebook. That’s girl power on the Internet!
The new songs he sang included the pop Stomping The Roses and pop-ballad Everything & More.Dripping with sweat three-quarters into the 90-minute show, he took a break before returning to the stage for his encore songs which included the Bryan Adams’ hit, Heaven.
Archuleta’s Kuala Lumpur concert was the last on his Asian Tour showcase. He had performed in Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam before he arrived here on Monday.
Before the concert, presented by his distribution label Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia, Archuleta also met fans who were winners of various contests.
He sang 17 songs. My favourites included the 1970s Elevator (despite the use of auto-tune) and Zero Gravity (for its pop-rock beat). Of course, there’s also his irresistible bouncing on stage.
The 1980s Tears For Fears hit Everybody Wants To Rule The World was a blast from my past! I enjoyed Archuleta’s impassioned rendition but I think the icing on the cake was the final encore, Crush. The band also had a good time, at times sounding like a metal group.
Yes, as Archuleta sang in another hit, Touch My Hand, “I can’t let the music stop, can’t let this feeling end”. We all felt it that Tuesday night, leaving the stadium — demurely — with smiles pasted on our faces.
His other side
AT the Monday Press conference, silky tenor David Archuleta whetted fans’ appetite for his concert when he sang a few bars of Stevie Wonder’s Lately.
It was in response to a query on who he’d like to collaborate with. His reply was: “Right now, at this moment, Stevie Wonder. It’s just him at the keyboard, and that’s just cool.”
He also thought Malaysian girls “are really cool”, adding that he remembered the large crowd of fans at his mini-concert in Sunway Lagoon back in 2009.
With oblique references to his own hit singles, Archuleta replied to queries about crushes with “I don’t have a crush lately” and that “I’m waiting for my kind of perfect”.
He also announced the Asian Tour Edition of The Other Side Of Down, which will have five new singles and karaoke versions of the original music videos of Crush, Touch My Hand and Something ‘Bout Love, among other songs.
Revealing another side to his character, Archuleta said he had visited leprosy camps in Chennai, as part of Rising Star Outreach, early this year. He told Life & Times: “It was a very humbling experience. It just makes you appreciate things more and gives you a different perspective.” — By SUBHADRA DEVAN
“Music Connects People Together”
Great Read!
According to @VioletArchangel this is one of the private interviews he had
Exclusive David Archuleta’s interview (with Tuoi Tre Newspaper – the Youth newspaper) on July 21st, 2011
David Archuleta: This is the first time I’ve been in Vietnam. Through my fans I have already known about your country a long time ago. Now I’m feeling excited but I’m nervous, too. I don’t know how the show is going to be. Hope everything will be okay. “Xin chao Vietnam.Cam on” (“Hello Vietnam. Thank you.” – he said it in Vietnamese)
-Can you tell me about the show tonight? Is there going to be anything special in it?
David: Sorry but I can’t tell you, that will be a surprise. However I think people can go there and enjoy the “real music”, that means feeling the beat, the lyrics of the songs and dancing along with it.
-Many people said that American pop is too “sexy” for the time being, what do you think of that?
David: Really? I usually sing pop music, so am I sexy? (Laughed) Well I think it’s not a big problem. There’re still songs that have positive meaning.
-You came to Asia for your tour this time, so according to you what are the differences between the American listeners and the Asian listeners?
David: I think we’re already born in differences, aren’t we? We are the individuals and of course our music hobbies are not the same. Maybe the American teenagers like to listen to dancing music more than the Asian teenagers. But what I realize through the tours I’ve had is that the music passion’s what we all have in common. No matter where you’re from, how you look like, what kind of language you use, the music through it all has the power to connect people together.
-After American Idol 2008, you became a famous and a much-loved singer. Do you have any preparation for that?
David: I was very happy and a little bit “shock” with the love that fans gave me in the American Idol. After that, I also had some psychological preparation about the fame I’m going to have. I had some difficulty choosing a way to move on. I like writing music, playing instruments and also singing. I was pretty confused on what I would be, a musician, a singer or an instrument player. But now it seems okay to me. I accompany on the piano and I sing songs that I wrote.
-You are currently following the young, gently pop music. Do you think some day you will change it?
David: With me, music is born within the life’s creativity. Music also gives you the new and inspirational experiences. I’m not sure about changing my kind of music, but what life gave me, I would give it into my music.
-Do you see yourself changing anything since you’ve become famous?
David: Basically, I think I’m still me, but of course I’ve experienced a lot. In the last five years of my life I had some positive changes actually: I’m not afraid of being taken photos anymore, I’m more confident, I’m talking a lot now, and I’m able to do more things that I want.
-You had published the book “Chords of Strength”. It’s a very interesting book. Will you continue to write the next part of the book?
David: Oh I wrote that book when I was 18. It’s a chance for me to share the teenage problem that I’ve been through. It’s a meaningful time for everyone, when they give big decisions. And yes, I’ve thought about publishing the next part of the book, maybe from the diary’s pages that I am writing, in this tour.
-What’s your plan for future, David?
David: I’m going for an Asian tour. Thanks to that I’ve already had some inspiration to write a song for the Asian fans, and it’s just completed last week. When this tour has ended, I am coming back to America and continuing my music projects. I want to write more meaningful songs.
-Thank you, David Archuleta!
First Int w/ David Archuleta After Leaving Jive
In his first interview since David Archuleta and Jive Records parted ways in February, the 20-year-old singer told The Tribune that it was a mutual decision that he move on from Jive.
He recorded three albums of the label: his self-titled 2007 debut, which reached as high as No. 2 on the Billboard charts and spawned the hit single “Crush”; his 2009 album, “Christmas From the Heart”; and 2010’s “The Other Side of Down,” which Billboard magazine reported in February has sold only 67,000 copies, compared to 765,000 for his first album.
Leaving Jive Records was a freeing experience, said Archuleta. “Since ‘American Idol’ I never had the time to think about what decisions need to be made,” he said. “I thought [leaving] was a great opportunity. A great new door had opened.”
Archuleta said that he has talked to other record labels since then, but has resisted the urge to sign with any of them. “The goal this year is to take the time I need to know what I want to become.”
Too often in the past, he said, producers would give him songs that didn’t fit his vision or voice. “I want to make my voice come through more,” Archuleta said. “I want to do songs that are more vocally driven, so I can be emotional.”
Archuleta said he is spending his time with family and friends — though he said “No” when asked if he had a significant other — and writing songs on the piano as he figures out when his path will take him. He still wants to pursue pop, but didn’t want to be a “classical pop singer.” He has been listening a lot to Adele and The Civil Wars, the latter a country-folk duo that includes former writing partner Joy Williams.
Immediately after the Stadium of Fire, Archuleta will embark on a short tour of Asia, where interest in him has not abated. For stateside fans, they can expect Archuleta’s 2010 Christmas-time performances with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to be released on CD and DVD Sept. 6 by Deseret Book. Singing with the Choir was a dream come true, he said. “It was a pretty overwhelming experience. It was one of the most amazing experiences I’ll ever have in my life. I was honored.”
In the end, his faith helped guide him, he said, and he knows his fans are anxious to hear from him, with his Stadium of Fire concert being his first in Utah since his performances with the Choir. “I’ve been taking time,” he said. “I really appreciate the patience the fans have shown.”

FINDING HIS OWN DIRECTION
Translated by Salamahafifi
When David Archuleta’s name was dropped by record label, Jive Records, fans of the cute singer began questioning his goal in music.
This decision made by the record label that has previously taken care of many popular singers including Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync and Allison Iraheta definitely came as a shocker.
To them (the fans), it is a huge loss for a popular record label such as Jive Records to let go of a special talent like Archuleta.
Moreover with the American Idol Season 7 Runner-Up title he holds, it should have been an advantage for Archuleta to be with Jive Records.
The reason given by Jive Records for the drop is because his third album, The Other Side Of Down failed to reach remarkable sales.
Since 18th of February this year, the album distributed by Sony Music Entertainment recorded sales of only 67000 copies.
This figure is only based on the sales in the United States and the figure is far different from his first album, David Archuleta which successfully sold nearly one million units; recognised as platinum.
Not only that, compared to his debut album which managed to hit second on the Billboard 200 charts, his sophomore album The Other Side of Down was only on the thirteenth position.
“I realise many were shocked with this news but I see it from a positive perspective. Jive has actually offered a new contract for me to be with them. “
“But I turned the offer down as I haven’t been happy with them these past two years. It’s because the direction I want to go with music is not going where I want it to go.”
“For the time being, I need time to sit and think thoroughly about the future.”
“Even so, I still see myself as lucky to have been given the opportunity to work with people who have more experience in this industry,” explained Archuleta in a phone interview arranged by Sony Music Malaysia recently.
After joining American Idol in 2008 and signed contract with Jive Records, Archuleta has recorded three albums including a Christmas album titled Christmas From The Heart (2009).
Continuing with the interview, the 20-year-old Archuleta said that he was not given the chance to decide his own direction in music as he needed to follow the record label’s directions.
For that reason, he felt that he was not free to make his own decisions that he feels is best for his own music career.
Since he’s no longer tied to any record label currently, Archuleta regards this as freedom to search for better opportunities.
It’s not that there are no labels that want to take him as their recording artist, but for now, says Archuleta, he’s more comfortable moving at his own pace.
“What’s the point of being a recording artist and produce the same result? Are they ready to hear and accept my ideas?”
“It would be better for me to focus on writing song and gather as much material before recording the next album,”
“I’m only prepared if my songs are well-received and the music that I want ensures that I stay as an artist,” explained Archuleta in a firm but diplomatic tone.
Even though faced with a problem that is seen as the end of his music career, Archuleta sees it as wisdom and believes there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Never regretting his choice, the son to Jeff Archuleta and Lupe Marie Mayorga described his journey for the past four years colourful. He has been through it all: love, sad, bitter, sweet.
What’s important to Archuleta is the strong and endless support from his fans since the start of his career.
Along with his maturity, the singer with the full name David James Archuleta wants to give new spirit and a positive impact to himself as well as his fans.
“Most of the songs written now are more focused on positive messages. I’ve done all these since the third album, which I co-wrote 10 out of 12 songs.”
“Even though I was a little disappointed with the album sales, as an artist and someone who was directly involved in the album production, I am very satisfied.”
“The album The Other Side of Down shows my maturity from all aspects and I’m happy that fans were able to receive them well. I was even more excited as I managed to gather more new fans through the album.”
“Most of the feedback I received didn’t expect that I would produce music such as those in the album. It proves that age is not an obstacle to produce music that leaves an impact in the hearts of listeners,” says Archuleta who is well-known for his songs such as Crush and A Little Too Not Over You.
In the same interview, this young man born on 28 December 1990 told us of his plans to produce new songs as an appetizer before he releases a new album.
“I have my own strategy in how I want to move on with my music career. There are no plans for a new album but a new song is very likely.”
“Recently, I met several parties in Los Angeles regarding this. At the same time, I go to Nashville to make music.”
“Many asked if I am now with the country genre. Of course not, I still remain with my identity,” he said.
